£106 with the picture gone, 128 GB

Sell your broken
iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Smashed, with the picture gone altogether, a 128 GB is worth £106 here: 65 per cent of what the same phone pays working. An iPhone 13 Pro Max is dear enough that a broken one still has a great deal of phone left in it, and the number says so.

What the damage costs you

Working, a 128 GB iPhone 13 Pro Max pays £164. Glass cracked, picture still perfect: £155, so the crack costs you £9. Picture gone, meaning lines, blots, blank patches or a black screen: £106, so the display costs you £58. Cracked glass over a working picture is close to free here, which is not true at most places you could send it.

The 128 GB is the smallest this phone was sold in and these are its prices, so nothing above can catch you out. On a panel this good a fault is obvious once you look: a green or pink cast, a band that will not refresh, or a line that stays put while everything else moves. Unsure? The lower grade is the safe answer, because we revise upwards without being asked and downwards only in writing. Our three grades, explained properly.

Where the iPhone 13 Pro Max sits

That makes the iPhone 13 Pro Max one of the better ones on this site. 2 of the 32 iPhones on this list come through damage better than that, and 28 come through it worse.

That is not one model being lucky. Sorted by price, the 32 we can price broken fall into two camps: the cheap ones average about 41 per cent kept, the ones from £120 upwards average about 57 per cent, and what separates them is what the working phone is worth rather than what its screen is made of.

The screen is the part that meets the floor and very little else does. On an iPhone 13 Pro Max the board, the cameras and the battery are almost always fine afterwards, and since they are most of the value of the phone, most of the value survives.

Worth knowing before you send it

A 6.7 inch 120 Hz panel is the single most expensive screen of its generation to replace, which is exactly why a broken one is worth sending to somebody who repairs rather than somebody who resells.

Macro photography came to iPhone with this generation, through an ultra wide lens that gained autofocus, and focusing close is a good test of a lens that has been knocked. Bring the camera near a printed label or a coin and the text should resolve sharply rather than staying soft. Tap 3 and give the telephoto the same treatment, then take a normal shot at 1x. Apple put each of the three lenses in its own ring of stainless steel trim under a sapphire crystal cover, so inspect the rings as well as the glass for dents and chips. Sierra blue and alpine green belong to this pair of Pros and to no other iPhone, which helps when the screen is too far gone to tell you which model is in your hand.

Sure it is this one?

6.7 inches, three rear cameras and a notch across the top of the screen. If the cut out at the top is a pill shape floating below the edge, you have a 14 Pro Max or newer, and those are worth more than this.

Every size, broken

Picture gone, this model runs 128 GB £106, 256 GB £124, 512 GB £124 and 1 TB £124.

Cracked with the picture good, 128 GB £155, 256 GB £170, 512 GB £170 and 1 TB £170.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max in one paragraph

It held the longest battery life of any iPhone for a while, so these were bought to be used hard and generally were.

As with the 13 Pro, the 128 GB is the only size limited to 1080p ProRes video. Every larger one records it at 4K.

What happens to a broken one here

The fast panel on an iPhone 13 Pro Max is expensive, and the scrap minded buyers use that as the reason to offer you almost nothing before selling it on to a workshop. We are the workshop. The repair happens here and the phone goes out from our own warehouse, which is where the difference in your offer comes from.

Free tracked postage, checked within a working day, paid within 48 hours of it arriving, and erased to recognised standards with the record kept.

What to do about the data, the postage and a grade we disagree with is all on the broken iPhone page. Everything else about this phone, damage or no damage, is on the iPhone 13 Pro Max page. Still deciding? What happens to your data when you sell your phone.

Broken iPhones either side of this one

Over £120 working they cluster near the top; under £50 they fall away.
