£60 with the picture gone, 128 GB

Sell your broken
iPhone 13.

A 128 GB with a faulty display is £60, which is 58 per cent of what we pay for the same phone in one piece. This is the middle of our range, where a damaged phone is a job of work rather than a write off, and the price is set on that basis.

What the damage costs you

Working, a 128 GB iPhone 13 pays £104. Glass cracked, picture still perfect: £103, so the crack costs you £1. Picture gone, meaning lines, blots, blank patches or a black screen: £60, so the display costs you £44. Cracked glass over a working picture is close to free here, which is not true at most places you could send it.

Shown for the 128 GB, the smallest this model came in, so nothing here is higher than the phone you have. On an OLED a failing panel shows as a dark blotch, a burnt in shadow of the keyboard, or a line of pixels that has simply stopped. If you cannot tell, pick the lower grade: a phone that turns out better than you described is upgraded at the bench. Our three grades, explained properly.

Where the iPhone 13 sits

That makes the iPhone 13 a little above the middle of our range. 13 of the 32 iPhones on this list come through damage better than that, and 16 come through it worse.

Across the 32 iPhones we buy and can price broken, the ones worth under £50 working keep about 41 per cent of that price with the picture gone, and the ones worth £120 or more keep about 57 per cent. It is the value of the phone that decides it, not the kind of screen in it.

The arithmetic behind it is dull and worth knowing. Fitting a panel, testing, erasing and dispatching cost about the same on any phone. An iPhone 13 is worth enough for those fixed costs to be a modest share of it, so the damage takes a modest share of the price.

Worth knowing before you send it

If somebody has already replaced the screen on it, check whether Face ID still works. On the 13 a non genuine display used to disable Face ID entirely until Apple changed that in iOS 15.2, and a phone repaired before then can still be carrying the message.

Sure it is this one?

6.1 inches, two rear cameras set diagonally, and a notch noticeably smaller than the 12's. The 14 that followed looks near enough the same phone, so if it matters, and it does to the price, check Settings, General, About.

Every size, broken

Picture gone, this model runs 128 GB £60, 256 GB £60 and 512 GB £60.

Cracked with the picture good, 128 GB £103, 256 GB £122 and 512 GB £122.

The iPhone 13 in one paragraph

The 13 is where the base storage doubled. The 12 before it started at 64 GB and the 13 starts at 128, so a 128 GB 13 is the bottom of its range where a 128 GB 12 was a step up from it.

What happens to a broken one here

There is a queue of people who would happily own an iPhone 13 once it has a working screen, and that queue is what the price is really based on. We do the repair, we sell it ourselves, and nobody stands in between taking a margin out of your offer.

Free tracked postage, checked within a working day, paid within 48 hours of it arriving, and erased to recognised standards with the record kept.

What to do about the data, the postage and a grade we disagree with is all on the broken iPhone page. Everything else about this phone, damage or no damage, is on the iPhone 13 page. Still deciding? How to check your iPhone storage size.

Broken iPhones either side of this one

Over £120 working they cluster near the top; under £50 they fall away.
