£327 with the picture gone, 256 GB

Sell your broken
iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Even with nothing on the screen at all, a 256 GB is £327. That is 54 per cent of the working price rather than the nothing you may have been expecting. An iPhone 17 Pro Max is expensive enough that a broken screen is an inconvenience to the price rather than the end of it.

What the damage costs you

Working, a 256 GB iPhone 17 Pro Max pays £606. Glass cracked, picture still perfect: £505, so the crack costs you £101. Picture gone, meaning lines, blots, blank patches or a black screen: £327, so the display costs you £279. The crack costs something, and a faulty picture costs a good deal more, so it is worth knowing which you have.

The 256 GB is the smallest this phone was sold in and these are its prices, so nothing above can catch you out. On a panel this good a fault is obvious once you look: a green or pink cast, a band that will not refresh, or a line that stays put while everything else moves. Unsure? The lower grade is the safe answer, because we revise upwards without being asked and downwards only in writing. Our three grades, explained properly.

Where the iPhone 17 Pro Max sits

That makes the iPhone 17 Pro Max a little below the middle of our range. Of the 32 models with a page like this one, 19 hold a larger share and 12 hold less.

That is not one model being lucky. Sorted by price, the 32 we can price broken fall into two camps: the cheap ones average about 41 per cent kept, the ones from £120 upwards average about 57 per cent, and what separates them is what the working phone is worth rather than what its screen is made of.

An iPhone 17 Pro Max is on the side of the line where the bench time starts to show. The repair costs what it costs whatever the phone is worth, and on this one it is a noticeable slice rather than a rounding error, which is why the share sits where it does.

Worth knowing before you send it

No known weak point yet on a phone this new. The thing actually worth doing before you send it is checking the capacity in Settings, because this model spans 256 GB to 2 TB and that spread moves the price further here than on anything else we buy.

Apple gave this phone a Ceramic Shield back for the first time, rated four times more resistant to cracks than earlier back glass, so if yours has cracked anyway, look hard at the cameras above it. They sit in the raised plateau that spans the full width. Zoom to 8x, the 200 mm setting, and make sure the picture is clean, then do the same at 0.5 for the ultra wide. The flash and the LiDAR Scanner share the right hand end of the plateau, and the Measure app will only put a height on a person standing in frame if the scanner is working. Beside an 18 Pro Max it is almost identical, so read the slot behind the SIM tray: A3526 marks a UK model.

Sure it is this one?

6.9 inches with three cameras. This, the 16 Pro Max and the 18 Pro Max are that size. The 16 Pro Max is titanium where this one is aluminium, and the 18 Pro Max is the same shape again a year on, so if you are still unsure, Settings, General, About names it outright.

Every size, broken

Picture gone, this model runs 256 GB £327, 512 GB £423, 1 TB £423 and 2 TB £443.

Cracked with the picture good, 256 GB £505, 512 GB £560, 1 TB £560 and 2 TB £560.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max in one paragraph

The largest screen in the range until the 18 Pro Max matched it, and the first iPhone with 2 TB of storage.

This was the first iPhone sold with 2 TB of storage, and the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max followed it a year later. If you have the 2 TB one, it is among the most valuable phones on this site, working or not.

What happens to a broken one here

A big screen on an expensive phone is where the gap between us and a scrap price is widest. An iPhone 17 Pro Max panel is a part we order and fit as a matter of routine, so the breakage is a line on a job sheet rather than a reason to start at nothing.

Postage and the pack are free whatever it turns out to be worth, it is checked within a working day, and you are paid within 48 hours of it arriving.

Questions about broken phones, from wiping one you cannot unlock to what happens if we disagree with your grade, are answered on the broken iPhone page. The whole of this model, working or not, is on the iPhone 17 Pro Max page. Still deciding? Trade in or sell? What Apple and the networks do not mention.

Broken iPhones either side of this one

Over £120 working they cluster near the top; under £50 they fall away.
