£151 with the picture gone, 256 GB

Sell your broken
iPhone Air.

Smashed, with the picture gone altogether, a 256 GB is worth £151 here: 43 per cent of what the same phone pays working. An iPhone Air is dear enough that a broken one still has a great deal of phone left in it, and the number says so.

What the damage costs you

Working, a 256 GB iPhone Air pays £351. Glass cracked, picture still perfect: £183, so the crack costs you £168. Picture gone, meaning lines, blots, blank patches or a black screen: £151, so the display costs you £200. The crack costs something, and a faulty picture costs a good deal more, so it is worth knowing which you have.

Shown for the 256 GB, the smallest this model came in, so nothing here is higher than the phone you have. On a panel this good a fault is obvious once you look: a green or pink cast, a band that will not refresh, or a line that stays put while everything else moves. If you cannot tell, pick the lower grade: a phone that turns out better than you described is upgraded at the bench. Our three grades, explained properly.

Where the iPhone Air sits

That makes the iPhone Air a little below the middle of our range. Of the 32 models with a page like this one, 23 hold a larger share and 6 hold less.

Across the 32 iPhones we buy and can price broken, the ones worth under £50 working keep about 41 per cent of that price with the picture gone, and the ones worth £120 or more keep about 57 per cent. It is the value of the phone that decides it, not the kind of screen in it.

Here the cost of the work is starting to be felt. A panel and an afternoon are the same price on an iPhone Air as on a phone worth three times as much, and against this one they take a visible bite, which is why it does not sit up with the dearest models.

Worth knowing before you send it

It is eSIM only. There is no SIM tray on it at all, which is not a fault and is worth knowing before you look for one.

On an Air, the raised plateau on the back is more than a camera bump. Apple milled it to hold the camera, a speaker and the chip, so after a knock there, take a photo at 1x and 2x and then play something out loud to hear that the speaker is clean. The charging port is unusual too: titanium, 3D printed to be thin, and worth checking with a cable that should click in and stay put while it charges. Because the Air has no SIM tray, Apple prints its model number inside that port instead, on the face nearest the display, and a UK one reads A3517 under a bright light. The band is polished titanium with a mirror finish, and sky blue, light gold and cloud white were made for this model alone.

Sure it is this one?

The thinnest iPhone Apple has made, 6.5 inches, with one rear camera. Nothing else in the range is close on thickness, so if you have held one you know. There is no SIM tray anywhere on it, on any Air, sold anywhere.

Every size, broken

Picture gone, this model runs 256 GB £151, 512 GB £161 and 1 TB £161.

Cracked with the picture good, 256 GB £183, 512 GB £183 and 1 TB £370.

The iPhone Air in one paragraph

The thinnest iPhone Apple has made, with a single rear camera. It is not a Pro and it is not a base model, which is why it sits on its own in the list.

What happens to a broken one here

A big screen on an expensive phone is where the gap between us and a scrap price is widest. An iPhone Air panel is a part we order and fit as a matter of routine, so the breakage is a line on a job sheet rather than a reason to start at nothing.

Postage and the pack are free whatever it turns out to be worth, it is checked within a working day, and you are paid within 48 hours of it arriving.

Questions about broken phones, from wiping one you cannot unlock to what happens if we disagree with your grade, are answered on the broken iPhone page. The whole of this model, working or not, is on the iPhone Air page. Still deciding? How to check your iPhone storage size.

Over £120 working they cluster near the top; under £50 they fall away.
