£19 with the picture gone, 64 GB

Sell your broken
iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Even with nothing on the screen at all, a 64 GB is £19. That is 29 per cent of the working price rather than the nothing you may have been expecting. There is enough in an iPhone 11 Pro Max to be worth the bench time and not so much that the repair vanishes into it, which is what that share reflects.

What the damage costs you

Working, a 64 GB iPhone 11 Pro Max pays £65. Glass cracked, picture still perfect: £53, so the crack costs you £12. Picture gone, meaning lines, blots, blank patches or a black screen: £19, so the display costs you £46. The crack costs something, and a faulty picture costs a good deal more, so it is worth knowing which you have.

The 64 GB is the smallest this phone was sold in and these are its prices, so nothing above can catch you out. On an OLED a failing panel shows as a dark blotch, a burnt in shadow of the keyboard, or a line of pixels that has simply stopped. Unsure? The lower grade is the safe answer, because we revise upwards without being asked and downwards only in writing. Our three grades, explained properly.

Where the iPhone 11 Pro Max sits

That makes the iPhone 11 Pro Max less than most of the phones we buy. Of the 32 models with a page like this one, 27 hold a larger share and 2 hold less.

That is not one model being lucky. Sorted by price, the 32 we can price broken fall into two camps: the cheap ones average about 41 per cent kept, the ones from £120 upwards average about 57 per cent, and what separates them is what the working phone is worth rather than what its screen is made of.

It is the cost of handling it rather than anything about the phone. The same repair, the same testing and the same postage apply whatever an iPhone 11 Pro Max is worth, and here they are a large fraction of the whole, which is what pushes the share down.

Worth knowing before you send it

A phone of this age that shuts down suddenly with charge still showing is describing a tired battery rather than a broken phone, and a battery is one of the cheapest things on it to put right. Grade it on the screen and the case, not on that.

On this phone the front camera does two jobs, because the TrueDepth module above the display both takes selfies and runs Face ID. Lock it, check it opens to your face first time, then flip the camera round: this generation moved to a 12 megapixel front camera with a wider view, and it shoots slow motion selfies at 120 frames per second, so film a short burst of that as well. Each of the three rear lenses has a sapphire crystal cover, and each deserves its own photo. Check the steel band for knocks, then plug in a Lightning cable and make sure it charges without being held at an angle. Its IP68 rating, four metres for 30 minutes, was never permanent by Apple's own account, so keep a cracked one well away from water.

Sure it is this one?

6.5 inches, three cameras, matte back, stainless steel band. The XS Max is the same screen size with two cameras and a glossy back. If you can see three lenses on a phone this big, it is this one or a 12 Pro Max, and the 12 has flat sides where this has curved ones.

Every size, broken

Picture gone, this model runs 64 GB £19, 256 GB £19 and 512 GB £19.

Cracked with the picture good, 64 GB £53, 256 GB £53 and 512 GB £53.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max in one paragraph

The three camera system arrived with this generation, so a cracked 11 Pro Max still has three working lenses in it.

What happens to a broken one here

At this age it goes one of two ways, decided at the bench rather than in advance. Sound underneath, it gets a screen and becomes somebody's next phone. Not sound, and the board, the cameras and the housing go on the parts shelf for the ones that are.

Postage and the pack are free whatever it turns out to be worth, it is checked within a working day, and you are paid within 48 hours of it arriving.

Questions about broken phones, from wiping one you cannot unlock to what happens if we disagree with your grade, are answered on the broken iPhone page. The whole of this model, working or not, is on the iPhone 11 Pro Max page. Still deciding? How to turn off Find My iPhone before you sell.
